The Metaverse has been trending all over the world, with its games, glam virtual concerts and worlds that let people sitting anywhere interact with each other. The hype had us all mesmerized, but is it really something we want to indulge in?
A Metaverse is an endless 3-D virtual space - a manifestation of the actual world wherein anyone and everyone can exist in any form. A virtual world is as stimulating as a person wants it to be. It can provide constant entertainment and unlimited new experiences. Unfortunately, it comes at a great price. Living in an environment like that would soon make reality feel bland and unsatisfying in comparison. This could lead to unhealthy addiction among its users, especially children. A vital concern of looking into the potential harmful impact such as exposure to cybercrime and dissociation from the real world develops.
Metaverse has been implemented in multiple fields such as the development of video games. Tech experts are working to incorporate Metaverse into e-commerce, mass interactive spaces, fashion and real estate.
Tech giant Meta (earlier called Facebook) made the first move by rebranding themselves to show their commitment to develop the Metaverse.
But don’t you think Meta is actually going for the worse? It is eminent that the social media empire is facing a consistent run of losses since it started working on Metaverse. The collection of personal data from the users threatens their privacy and allows it to be treated like a commodity - traded, bought and sold. The current condition of intrusive technologies already raises concerns about user privacy and now, a larger threat looms. How will metaverse control someone’s privacy?
On that note, while the Metaverse was created to revolutionize the present world with its out-of-the-box ideas, some things are better left as a sci-fi plotline.
